The Metropolitan Stadium: History and Architecture

May 23, 2025

In previous videos, we've told you all about the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, one of the many tourist attractions to visit in Madrid. And to be fair, along with our friends and clients at De Salas, we wanted to prepare a video for the red-and-white fans.

Welcome to the Metropolitan!

If the Santiago Bernabéu stadium has been an undisputed symbol of greatness, modernity and tradition for Real Madrid fans for decades, the Metropolitano, formerly known as Wanda Metropolitano, represents the vibrant soul of Atlético fans: passion, resilience and a deep love for the colors.

Opened in 2017 after an ambitious renovation, this stadium has become much more than a sports venue: it is an architectural gem and a benchmark for innovation and sustainability in Europe.

A story that reinvents itself

Located in the San Blas-Canillejas neighborhood, the current Metropolitano occupies the site of the former "La Peineta" stadium, originally designed to host athletics events. Atlético de Madrid set itself the ambitious challenge of transforming this structure into one of the most modern stadiums on the continent, combining its heritage with the most advanced architectural technology.

The name "Metropolitano" is no coincidence: it pays homage to the club's former home ground in the 20s and 30s. Its reopening in September 2017, with a match against Málaga CF, marked a new era for the club and its fans.

An architecture at the service of emotion.

Designed by the Cruz y Ortiz architectural studio, the stadium blends elegantly into the urban environment thanks to its oval shape, soft lines, and a spectacular roof that appears to float above the stands. Its tensile membrane roof, one of the largest in Europe, is composed of 96 petals that illuminate the interior with a convenient LED system that can change color depending on the event.

With a capacity for 68.456 spectators, the Metropolitano offers excellent visibility from any seat and an immersive experience, even for non-football fans.

Beyond football: a must-see tourist destination

The stadium has become a must-see for those who want to discover the sporting soul of Madrid. Its Stadium Tour allows you to explore the locker room, the benches, the press room, and access the pitch as the players do.

An interesting fact: the Metropolitano was the first stadium in the world to obtain LEED Gold certification for its energy efficiency and environmental commitment. This makes it not only a sporting landmark, but also an example of sustainable architecture.

Stage of major events

Thanks to its multipurpose infrastructure and privileged location near the airport and the center of Madrid, it has established itself as one of the favorite venues for major events in the capital.

A symbol of identity

For many Madrid residents—and especially Atlético fans—the Metropolitano represents much more than a football field: it's a meeting place, a place of pride, and passion. Its stadiums exude a family-friendly and authentic atmosphere that attracts more and more visitors.

If you're planning a unique visit to Madrid, the Metropolitano awaits you with its history, avant-garde architecture, and the power of a fan base that never lets up. An experience that will undoubtedly captivate both sports fans and those looking to rediscover the city through its most iconic venues.

We're signing off for today and reminding you that we'll be back in seven more days with much more lifestyle content from De Salas.
