El winter It is much more than short days and cold nights. It is one of the seasons where nature gives us some of the most spectacular phenomena. And since 2020 is ending (finally), in De Salas We wanted to end the year by gathering a few to tell our clients and friends, with the hope that they will say goodbye to the year thinking that, luckily, nature takes its course, and with the hope that we can all continue with our normal life also as soon as possible.
So the first place that has caught our attention for its singular beauty is, without a doubt, the aurora boreal. A fantasy of colors that can only be seen in winter and at high latitudes. To explain the phenomenon of the northern lights we must turn to physicists specialized in magneto-hydrodynamics, according to what they say from norway tourism, one of the best countries to see the phenomenon live.
But since these experts speak in a language that is difficult for most mortals to understand, they have found a somewhat simpler explanation: when solar explosions and flares reach a certain intensity, enormous amounts of particles are thrown by this star into space. As we say, Norway It is one of the most visited countries when you want to observe this phenomenon, but Iceland, Sweden o Alaska They also enjoy those wonderful skies that I hope we can see with our own eyes one day.
Another show that occurs in our winter is to see the advance of the glacier Perito Moreno Glacier, in Argentina. And we say in our winter because in the southern hemisphere it is now summer although the temperature of Calafate, the region where it is located, does not have a summer like the one we are used to.
It is one of the largest living glaciers in the world, 50 kilometers long and whose observation leaves everyone who visits it speechless. It is common to hear the sound of ice and, with a little luck, you witness the impressive spectacle of seeing one of its walls detach and fall when called. Glacier Lake, dyed an unexpected turquoise color.
On the same continent but much higher up, we discovered the frozen bubbles of the Abraham Lake from Alberta, Canada. The explanation is found, in addition to the winter, in the bacteria that live at the bottom of the lake and that feed on dead organic matter, so that they periodically release methane and that gas ends up being trapped in the ice. Although you have to be careful, because the bubbles are flammable, so don't light a match nearby if you don't want to get scared.
And we end with a curious phenomenon that also invites us to think about summer and, why not, about a near future that is more positive than this present we have. Its about Green Lake in Austria. It is a natural park surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountainous landscapes in the country and whose lake with crystalline green waters offers impressive views in winter, but in summer, its level rises so much that it becomes one of the best places to dive.
How do you read? The park, with its walkways, benches and trees, remains submerged underwater in the summer, so it is a tourist attraction both on the cold days of winter, like in the hot summers. A perfect excuse to visit the place at two times of the year.
In this complicated 2020, in De Salas We wanted to say goodbye in a friendly way, with nature as the final point and at the same time as continuity. Because a winter in pandemic it seems more winter and our wish is that the cold days serve to continue enjoying life, which now more than ever, is the best gift we can ask of nature. For 2021 Full of life, in every way!
