In the heart of the City of Santo Domingo declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO , lies one of the most fascinating historical treasures of the American continent: the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Minor And today we have prepared, for our friends and clients of De Salas, a tour of what is considered the first cathedral on the American continent.
Can you come with us?
Also known as the Primate of America , the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Minor , is not just a religious temple, but the first symbol of cathedral architecture in the New World and a place full of history, art, and curiosities that make it an essential stop for lovers of culture and good living.
The first cathedral on the American continent
Construction of this cathedral began in 1512, just two decades after the discovery of America, and was completed in 1541. In 1546, Pope Paul III elevated it to the rank of Metropolitan and Primate Cathedral of America at the request of Emperor Charles V. Since then, it has been considered the "mother" of all cathedrals on the continent.
A unique architectural fusion
This cathedral is a delight for the senses. Its Plateresque façade and predominantly Gothic structure are intertwined with Renaissance, Baroque, and even Mudejar details, making it an exceptional example of colonial architecture. Inside, you can visit up to 14 chapels filled with sacred works of art, altars carved in wood and marble, and tombs of historical figures.
Some interesting facts we can share about the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor include the fact that Christopher Columbus was there... or at least his remains. For a long time, it was believed that Columbus's remains rested in this cathedral. Although they now rest in the Columbus Lighthouse, the debate continues between Dominican and Spanish experts.
Its bells have a history. One of the bells in the main bell tower was cast from the metal of 16th-century Spanish swords.
Don't forget that this cathedral is in the heart of the Colonial Zone, with all that entails. You can take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a gourmet lunch on one of the nearby terraces, or explore museums, art galleries, and charming local boutiques.
And if you're into comfortable cultural tourism, we're sure you'll find a perfect blend of history, architecture, spirituality, and exclusivity here.
For practical information, you can visit Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free, and we recommend taking a guided tour to make the experience even more enriching.
Visiting the Primate Cathedral of the Americas is much more than a day trip: it's an opportunity to reconnect with history, contemplate the beauty of sacred art, and experience an unforgettable cultural experience in one of the most authentic settings in the Caribbean.
We say goodbye for today and we'll see you in seven more days with much more lifestyle content from Salas.
