Mallorca welcomes the 36th Edition of the Sailing King's Cup, which will take place between July 29 and August 5.
In the surroundings of a magical island
Dragons and treasures, caves and pirates, mystery and legend. Mallorca hides as many stories as there are ancestral voices that tell them, and the oldest people in the area do not hesitate to give their ears to anyone who wants to sit down and listen.
That is why it is not surprising that the symbiosis between the island and the sea finds its best hallmark in the celebration of the King's Cup Regatta, which for 36 years has flooded the blue waters of the Mediterranean with sails and which in this occasion will do so from July 29 to August 5.
It consolidates its growth, reaching around 140 teams
Since that first edition in 1982 in which there were just over 50 participants and which premiered as a test open to all classes in compensated time, it has evolved and grown until reaching its historical ceiling in this 36th Edition with almost 140 teams of 24 nationalities.
The real-time competition would not take place until 2005, but since that date there has been no shortage of one-designs, which already make up half of the ten classes in which the fleet will be distributed, including GC32 flying catamarans. Regarding this category, the President of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Javier Sanz, pointed out that “the main novelty this year is the participation for the first time of a Spanish team, led by one of the most talented sailors in our country, Iker MartĂnez, who navigates with the RCNP chain.”
The monotypes for 2017
Because the ones making their debut in this 2017 edition are the ClubSwan50, spectacular one-designs that made their debut in the last edition and that chose the recently contested Sail Racing PalmaVela to make their European debut.
The competition program includes a maximum of 24 races for the GC32, 12 for the X35, Swan 45 and J80, and 11 for the rest of the classes.
Much more than a regatta
But since man does not live by sailing alone, the celebration of the Copa del Rey is surrounded by an endless number of activities. And the competition has become a benchmark in the summer of the Balearic island, which is completed on land with a very complete social agenda.
A first class social event
To the nearly 1500 crew members we must add the personalities and guests who gather during those days, and who have a gastronomic, musical and entertainment offer that attracts members of royal families such as the Monegasque one, to elite athletes or celebrities. from the world of culture.
There will be three key events for this 36th Edition of the Copa del Rey. The Sailor's Party by Club de Mar Discoteca – Picco Palma, Shipowners Dinner, and the ceremony Trophy Delivery which will put an end to the edition, although that will be the last day, August 5. Until then, the largest of the Balearic Islands will be a meeting place for many of our clients, champions of the country's main companies. Cast off!
